A light aircraft made an emergency landing on a busy road near Gloucester.

The aircraft was forced to land on the central reservation of the A40 Golden Valley bypass, between Gloucester and Cheltenham, at around 6pm today.

The road was subsequently shut in both directions between the A417 and J11 of the M5 due to what was described as an “aviation incident”.

Emergency services were on the scene, but it is understood no one was injured, and no other vehicles were involved.

Gloucestershire Police said they were called to the scene and the road has since been re-opened.

There were delays of 10 minutes and around one mile of congestion on the approach to the scene.

Images shared of the aircraft appeared to show minimal damage, despite the awkward landing.

A witness who saw the plane on the road while travelling on a bus, 17-year-old Vesper Gray Smith, said: “I felt pretty surprised, as it’s really not something that happens often.

“I think everyone else on the bus was quite surprised as well.

“One of the first things I thought about the incident is if everyone is alright, and luckily they were.”
